Volley ball is one interesting game which is played world over. The game created by a YMCA physical director, Mr. William G Morgan as a pastime is today is quite famous and an Olympic team sport. The game has some of the characteristics of tennis and some of handball. In those days it was called “ Mintonette”. Though it was initially designed as an indoor game, it is now more famous as an outdoor game or a beach game. However, there are certain rules for the game and strictly needs to be played in a “court” and has certain dimensions.

The Volleyball Court dimensions are strictly followed in any formal volley ball game. The dimensions of an indoor Volleyball Court and an outdoor Court are different. The dimensions of an indoor Volleyball Court which is rectangular in shape are 18 meters by 9 meters or 59 feet by 29 feet 6 inches. The court is divided into two equal halves by a center line. A beach Volleyball Court measures 16 meters by 8 meters.

An attack line or center line drawn on either side of the net is 3ft from the net on each side of the court. This line divides the court on either side as front row and back row. These Volleyball Court dimensions are standard, and no deviation is allowed between different types of courts.

Rows are further divided into three zones on each side and positions in each row. From left to right, the back row has zone 5 (left back position), zone 6 (middle back position) and zone 1 (right back position), where the server is positioned during service. Similarly, front row has zone 4 (left front position), zone 3 (middle front position) and zone 2 (right front position). The surrounding free zone around the Volleyball Court is generally 3 meters wide. The court boundary lines are generally 2 inches thick.

The net is hung exactly at the center of the court and at a height of 2.43 meters from the floor for men and at about 2.24 meters from the floor for women. Antennae are placed on each side of the net lining up with the boundaries of the court.

It is important to maintain uniform Volleyball Court dimensions to ensure fair and healthy volley ball game. It is always recommended to take professional help before designing the Volleyball Court to avoid injuries during and after the game too.
